My cruising and underwater adventures aboard Maruzza: a tiny sailboat bound for the African coast

This is me...

Hello everyone! My name is Giuseppe Bucciarelli. I’m a biologist, nature documentary filmmaker, cameraman, director, sailor, and avid traveler. I love the dust of the roads and the salty smell of the waves. If I had been born 250 years ago, I would have joined some expedition in search of the sources of the Nile.
I’ve lived in many places — from Africa to the Americas to India — passing through nearly the entire Mediterranean and a few islands of Oceania in the Pacific.
For more than twenty years I’ve been roaming the Aegean Sea with my sailboat of less than seven meters, the tiny Maruzza.
There’s nothing to be done. That’s just the way I am!

...and this is Maruzza!

Here is my girlfriend! An ALPA DODI 670 from the late 1970s. She was designed by the brilliant naval architect Ericus Van de Stadt and built by the very famous A.L.P.A. shipyard in Offanengo, near Cremona. In short, she’s a sailboat with sleek lines, medium/light displacement, excellent upwind performance, fast and safe. No toilet, but five headsails and three reefing points on the mainsail!
She has taken me as far as Syria, Lebanon, Israel, Tunisia, Cyprus, Malta, Turkey, Greece…
Now she has decided to head into the Atlantic Ocean all the way to Guinea-Bissau, in West Africa. I’m not resisting — I’m following her.

Follow me to Africa!

Reaching West Africa by sailboat across the Atlantic Ocean is a project I find wonderful! But it’s also demanding and involves the world of sailing in all its aspects — from preparing the boat to maintenance to navigation — touching on adventure, travel, encounters with incredibly fascinating cultures, and even spearfishing!
In my videos, which I publish every Sunday on YouTube, you’ll find all this and perhaps even more!

A Taste of Life Aboard Maruzza

Far-off destinations

You just need patience and the world is in your hands, slowly slowly.

Stunning anchorages

I tiny boat may not be that comfortable, but opens the doors to your visions.

Fish for dinner

Self-sufficiency is key and it also means discovering the depth of the sea.

Destination Africa

Once you take the decision of setting sails, the horizon is no more a limit.

ALIGNED WITH NATURE

Life on the Maruzza moves to the rhythms of the sun and the wind. Each day begins with the sway of the waves and the flash of sunlight on the water, and I rise with the tide, ready to dive into the depths for spearfishing. The sea demands attention, and every motion counts—every stroke, every breath, every careful aim.

I set sail only when Aeolus sends the wind, hoisting the sails and letting the Maruzza dance across the waves. The boat leans, cuts through the water, and I feel the thrill of being carried by a powerful element.

Living like this has sharpened my senses. I notice the smallest shifts in wind and current, the sudden flash of a fish in the deep, the way the hull responds to a changing wave. Life on the Maruzza is not just a voyage—it’s a constant rhythm of movement, decision, and timing, a dance with the sea that never stops
